Gardens and parks worth visiting in the Herault
Gardens aren’t the first thing people think of when visiting the Herault. That’s a shame. The area has a handful of parks and gardens worth the trip, from Mediterranean gardens to wine estates and ancient cloisters. It’s a good outing when it’s too hot for the beach or when you want a quiet half-day.
The Saint-Adrien garden, Servian
This is the best-known garden in the area, and it deserves its reputation. Set in a former basalt quarry, the Saint-Adrien garden is a maze of terraces, pools, caves and Mediterranean plants. Water lilies, agaves, bamboo, roses, waterfalls.
The setting is surprising: the rocky quarry walls form a natural frame. You don’t expect it when you arrive. The visit takes a good hour, longer if you linger. It’s peaceful.

The gardens of Valmagne Abbey
Valmagne Abbey is a wine estate housed in a 12th-century Cistercian abbey. The gardens around the cloister are lovely: a Gothic cloister with a physic garden (medicinal and aromatic plants), fountains, boxwood-lined paths.
The abbey itself is worth seeing (the nave is used as a barrel cellar), but the gardens stand on their own. You can sit in the cloister and do nothing for a while. It’s exactly the kind of place where it feels good to be.
Wine tasting is offered at the end of the visit. The Valmagne wines are good.

Cassan Castle park, Roujan
The Chateau de Cassan is a former 18th-century royal priory, with formal French gardens. The layout is geometric, with trimmed boxwood, gravel paths, a perspective that leads the eye down towards the vineyards.
It’s less spectacular than Saint-Adrien, but elegant and quiet. The castle itself is worth a look (the interior rotunda is surprising). The estate also produces wine.

The Jardin des Plantes, Montpellier
The oldest botanical garden in France, founded in 1593. It’s a university garden, not a theme park, and that’s its charm. Old glasshouses, centuries-old trees, collections of Mediterranean and tropical plants.
The garden is right in Montpellier’s centre, so you can combine the visit with a city stroll. Entry is free.

The Engarran estate, Laverune
On the outskirts of Montpellier, the Domaine de l’Engarran is an 18th-century chateau surrounded by formal French gardens. An avenue of plane trees, ponds, an Italian-style garden with statues. The estate is also a vineyard (Languedoc AOC) with tasting.
A visit that combines garden, architecture and wine. Pleasant in spring and autumn.

The bishop’s cloister, Agde
More modest, but very close. The cloister of the Saint-Etienne cathedral in Agde is a small, enclosed, quiet space with black volcanic stone arcades. A few plants, a fountain. You sit on a bench and enjoy the silence in the middle of Agde.
The cathedral itself, built in black basalt, is striking. Visiting both takes about 30 minutes.
