The Canal du Midi: cruise and UNESCO heritage

The Canal du Midi runs just a few kilometres from Florensac. It connects Toulouse to the Mediterranean over 240 kilometres, and it’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Pierre-Paul Riquet designed it in the 17th century, and it remains one of the most impressive feats of engineering in France.

You can explore it by boat, by bike, or simply on foot along the towpath. From our house, the nearest access points are at Agde and Béziers.

Cruising from Agde

The river port at Agde sits at the foot of the round lock, a structure that’s one of a kind. The lock is circular (three basins shaped like a clover) and lets boats choose between three directions: towards the sea, towards Béziers, or towards the Thau lagoon. It’s a monument in itself.

Several companies offer cruises departing from Agde. Short trips (1.5 to 2 hours) head up the canal towards Béziers, passing through locks along the way. Watching the locks work fascinates everyone, especially children. You go up, you come down, the gates open and close, the boat moves a few hundred metres and starts again.

For a longer experience, you can hire a self-drive barge by the day or the week. No licence needed. They explain how everything works and you set off at your own pace. Maximum speed is 8 km/h. It’s slow, and that’s the point.

Cycling the towpath

The towpath runs alongside the canal for nearly its entire length. It’s flat, shaded by plane trees, and suitable for all levels. You don’t need to be sporty.

From Agde, you can cycle towards Béziers (about 25 km). The stretch is beautiful, with stone bridges, locks, and passages under canopies of plane trees. You’ll pass barges, joggers, families.

The Agde-Béziers section goes through Villeneuve-lès-Béziers, where you can stop for a break. In Béziers, the canal bridge over the Orb is a highlight: the canal crosses above the river on a 240-metre bridge. You’re cycling on a bridge with a river underneath. It’s quite something the first time.

Bike hire is available in Agde and Béziers. Some companies offer a shuttle return so you only cycle one way.

The nine locks at Fonsérannes

In Béziers, the Fonsérannes locks are the most visited site on the Canal du Midi. Nine locks in a staircase, covering a drop of 21 metres. Boats go up (or down) step by step. It’s impressive to watch, even without getting on a boat.

The site has a small museum, a viewpoint at the top, and explanations of how it all works. Entry is free. Allow an hour to see it properly.

A bit of history

Pierre-Paul Riquet started construction in 1666 under Louis XIV. The idea of linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean by canal had existed since Roman times, but nobody had solved the problem of water supply. Riquet found the answer with the reservoir at Saint-Ferréol in the Montagne Noire, which captures rainwater and feeds the canal by gravity.

The project employed 12,000 workers over fifteen years. Riquet died a few weeks before the inauguration in 1681, bankrupt from cost overruns. The canal operated as a commercial waterway for two centuries, until the railway made it obsolete.

Today it’s almost exclusively used for leisure boating. And as a green route for cyclists and walkers.

The sick plane trees

This needs mentioning. The centuries-old plane trees lining the canal are being attacked by canker stain, a fatal fungus. Thousands have already been felled, and the canal doesn’t look the same in some stretches. Replanting with resistant species is underway, but it will take decades to restore the green canopies.

The Agde-Béziers section is still relatively unaffected. Make the most of it.

Getting there from Florensac

The round lock at Agde is 12 minutes by car. The Fonsérannes locks at Béziers are 25 minutes. You can easily combine both in a day, especially by bike along the canal.

The Canal du Midi is one of those things you have right on your doorstep and end up forgetting about. A walk along the towpath or a two-hour cruise puts things back in perspective. It’s beautiful, it’s peaceful, and it’s right here. Discover our rooms.
