The Tuesday market in Florensac

Local life 6 May 2025 5 min read

Tuesday is market day in Florensac. And here, the market is serious business. People go every week because it’s where you find the best local produce. No need to drive 30 km.

From the house, it’s a two-minute walk. Down the boulevard, turn left, and you’re in the stalls.

Tuesday morning atmosphere

The market sets up early, around 7:30. The first arrivals are the regulars: retirees after the best melons, mothers with pushchairs, workers stopping by before 9.

By 10, it’s packed. The aisles are tight, people squeeze past each other, say hello. The sellers call out, offer you a taste. There’s noise, colour, smell. It’s alive.

The market stretches along place de la Republique and the surrounding streets. It’s not huge. You can walk around it in half an hour. But it’s dense.

What you’ll find

Fruit and vegetables

This is the heart of the market. Several growers, some farming just a few kilometres away. In summer, the tomatoes are extraordinary. So are the peaches and apricots. In winter, squash, leeks, citrus from the coast.

My tip: the stand at the end of the main aisle, on the church side. Fair prices, everything in season.

Cheese and charcuterie

A goat cheese stand (often from the Causses) and a charcuterie stand. The dry saucisson is good. The spreadable cheeses too.

Olives and tapenades

There’s always an olive stand with trays as far as the eye can see. Green olives, black, spicy, with garlic, as tapenade. Grab a jar, that’s your evening aperitif sorted. Perfect alongside the local specialties.

Fish

A fishmonger comes from Agde. Depending on the catch, you’ll find sea bream, sea bass, sardines, mussels. Get there before 10 for the best choice.

Everything else

Clothes (it’s a southern market, there are always clothes), kitchenware, plants, local honey, sometimes a soap stand. And a rotisserie chicken van whose smell catches you from the moment you arrive.

My routine

I go to the market almost every Tuesday. I start with fruit and vegetables, do a full round, and finish with a coffee on the square. In summer, I pick up a melon and some tomatoes, and that’s lunch sorted.

For the B&B breakfasts, I get seasonal fruit from the market. The jams, I make myself: apricot or strawberry depending on the season. Paired with a glass of Picpoul de Pinet, that’s the terroir on a plate.

The market vs the supermarket

In Florensac, there’s a small supermarket and the market. Both coexist. But what you find at the market, you won’t find in a supermarket. The tomatoes don’t taste the same. Neither do the peaches. And the conversations over the stalls, you won’t find those anywhere else.

The market is also where you bump into neighbours, catch up on news, talk about the weather. It’s part of village life.

Other markets nearby

If you’re in the area for more than a week, there are other markets worth trying:

  • Pezenas: Saturday morning. Bigger, more touristy, but a beautiful setting in the old town.
  • Agde: Thursday morning. Large market, lots of fresh fish.
  • Marseillan: Tuesday morning (same time as Florensac, so you have to choose). Smaller, lagoon-side atmosphere.

But Tuesday in Florensac is still my favourite. It’s the right size: big enough for choice, small enough not to get lost in.
